L\u00e0, on dirait que le parcours plonge \u00e0 la verticale, s\u2019enfon\u00e7ant entre les rang\u00e9es de r\u00e9sineux et une enfilade de rochers moussus avant d&rsquo;amorcer un virage \u00e9troit. Un entrelacs de racines noueuses recouvre le sol. La falaise s&rsquo;arr\u00eate net devant un gouffre b\u00e9ant. Les cyclistes du dimanche jetteraient l\u2019\u00e9ponge, mais Arne Janssens s\u2019\u00e9lance sans sourciller dans la pente vertigineuse. Il a d\u00e9j\u00e0 emprunt\u00e9 ce passage \u00e0 maintes reprises, mais aujourd&rsquo;hui, il y a du nouveau au programme. Au cours de ses entra\u00eenements, il a d\u00e9j\u00e0 explor\u00e9 toutes les pistes, tous les chemins de traverse et les cr\u00eates, du Signal de Botrange dans les Hautes Fagnes, au nord des Cantons de l\u2019Est, \u00e0 Ouren \u00e0 l&rsquo;extr\u00eame sud-est. \u00ab Pour moi, le principal atout du v\u00e9lo, c&rsquo;est la libert\u00e9. Il suffit d\u2019enfourcher sa b\u00e9cane pour partir explorer la r\u00e9gion et d\u00e9couvrir des endroits que l&rsquo;on ne pourrait pas atteindre en voiture. \u00bb<\/p>\n<p>Faire le Stoneman, confie son fondateur, Roland Stauder, v\u00e9t\u00e9tiste professionnel du Tyrol du Sud, c\u2019est vivre une aventure sportive dans des paysages splendides. La performance et la technique, c\u2019est secondaire. Le propre de tout parcours Stoneman, c\u2019est l\u2019immersion dans la nature. Le tout premier Stoneman s&rsquo;\u00e9tait tenu dans les Dolomites. Des parcours en Allemagne, en Suisse et en Autriche ont suivi dans la foul\u00e9e. La Belgique fait d\u00e9sormais aussi partie du palmar\u00e8s. Ces circuits font d\u00e9filer des paysages diff\u00e9rents. Chacun a son caract\u00e8re et son charme particulier. Les beaux points de vue alternent avec les c\u00f4tes et les sections techniques qui poussent parfois le sportif jusque dans ses derniers retranchements. \u00bb Les parcours sont encore peu fr\u00e9quent\u00e9s. Parfois, on a la piste pour soi tout seul. Aujourd&rsquo;hui d&rsquo;ailleurs, il n&rsquo;y a pas grand monde en route. La faute \u00e0 la m\u00e9t\u00e9o sans doute. Hier soir, des nuages noirs s&rsquo;amoncelaient dans le ciel. Depuis le petit matin, il pleut. Le sol est spongieux, les pierres et les racines sont humides et glissantes. La roue arri\u00e8re charrie des monceaux de boue. En traversant les profondes flaques d&rsquo;eau, elle envoie des gerbes d\u2019eau de tous c\u00f4t\u00e9s. Arne ne tarde pas \u00e0 \u00eatre tremp\u00e9 jusqu\u2019aux os et tout crott\u00e9. Son v\u00e9lo n&rsquo;a rien \u00e0 lui envier. Un vrai bourbier mais c\u2019est \u00e7a le Stoneman : de la sueur, de la boue et du d\u00e9passement de soi. Pas question d\u2019abandonner, lance Arne en serrant les dents et en continuant \u00e0 mouliner comme un beau diable.<\/p>\n<p>Le concept du Stoneman est simple et en m\u00eame temps presque une mission impossible. Pour \u00eatre un Stoneman, un \u00ab vrai \u00bb, il faut faire le parcours complet en une journ\u00e9e. Il faut avaler de 120 \u00e0 176 kilom\u00e8tres et vaincre jusqu\u2019\u00e0 4 700 m\u00e8tres de d\u00e9nivel\u00e9 positif. Pour esp\u00e9rer remporter le troph\u00e9e tant convoit\u00e9, un gros caillou dor\u00e9. Normal : pour devenir un Stoneman, il faut \u00eatre solide comme un roc. Le cycliste amateur se contentera de l&rsquo;argent et du bronze, qui r\u00e9compense un parcours boucl\u00e9 respectivement en deux ou trois jours. Chaque participant re\u00e7oit une carte \u00e0 poin\u00e7onner aux points de contr\u00f4le. Quiconque vient \u00e0 bout du parcours en trois jours maximum peut pr\u00e9tendre au titre de \u00ab finisher \u00bb. L\u2019itin\u00e9raire est parfaitement balis\u00e9. Des infrastructures d\u2019accueil sont pr\u00e9vues : des \u00e9tablissements partenaires ont mis en place des formules d\u2019h\u00e9bergement v\u00e9los bienvenus, avec des stations de lavage des v\u00e9los et du mat\u00e9riel VTT. Dans tous les cas, ce n\u2019est pas de la tarte. \u00bb<\/p>\n<p>La carte est poin\u00e7onn\u00e9e sur le toit de la Belgique. Ceux qui s&rsquo;attendent \u00e0 un splendide panorama montagnard depuis Botrange, comme dans le Stoneman alpin, devront d\u00e9chanter. Du haut de ses 695 m\u00e8tres d&rsquo;altitude \u00e0 peine, le Signal de Botrange fait p\u00e2le figure. Ce n\u2019est pas moins beau pour autant. Sur un plateau de moyenne montagne s&rsquo;\u00e9tend la lande. Par beau temps, la vue porte loin au-del\u00e0 des hautes herbes et des buissons rabougris.<\/p>\n<p>Le vent dissipe les nappes de brume et les lambeaux de nuages pour laisser la bruine d\u00e9tremper la contr\u00e9e. La sensation de communion avec les \u00e9l\u00e9ments est totale. Le sentiment d&rsquo;immensit\u00e9 et d&rsquo;isolement n&rsquo;en est que plus fort. C&rsquo;est un moment intense, comme le Stoneman. On n\u2019a rien sans rien. Le d\u00e9passement de soi fait partie du jeu.
