Chacun de nous a pris vie dans le ventre de sa m\u00e8re en tant qu\u2019amas de cellules, avant de se d\u00e9velopper et d\u2019\u00eatre catapult\u00e9 sur terre en tant qu\u2019\u00eatre humain. Catapult\u00e9 dans la vie, color\u00e9e et grise, tonitruante et silencieuse, belle et \u00e9pouvantable. Bienvenue dans la \u00ab Family of Man \u00bb. Un instant, je dois m\u2019\u00e9carter des autres visiteurs : je sens les larmes me monter aux yeux.<\/p>\n<p>La visite de l\u2019exposition \u00ab The Family of Man \u00bb est une exp\u00e9rience tr\u00e8s intense. Les photos sont accompagn\u00e9es d\u2019extraits de textes de Shakespeare, James Joyce, Thomas Paine et Lillian Smith, laiss\u00e9s l\u00e0, \u00e0 c\u00f4t\u00e9, sans autre explication. \u00ab Deep inside, in a silent place where a child\u2019s fears crouch \u00bb : cette citation de l\u2019\u00e9crivaine Lillian Smith, imprim\u00e9e en blanc sur noir, est accol\u00e9e \u00e0 des photos d\u2019enfants pauvres, de petites filles et de petits gar\u00e7ons qui lancent \u00e0 l\u2019objectif un regard de r\u00e9signation ou de d\u00e9sespoir, derri\u00e8re du fil de fer barbel\u00e9, dans un paysage morne, parfois aux c\u00f4t\u00e9s d\u2019une m\u00e8re dont le regard aussi trahit la cruaut\u00e9 de la vie. Devant une petite maison isol\u00e9e que n\u2019entoure qu\u2019une prairie sauvage, trois fillettes se tiennent \u00e0 la cl\u00f4ture du b\u00e9tail et me regardent d\u2019un air grave. La cadette a les cheveux blonds, les deux autres les ont fonc\u00e9s. Je ne peux m\u2019emp\u00eacher de penser \u00e0 mes propres filles, deux grandes brunes, une petite blonde. Elles ont \u00e0 peu pr\u00e8s le m\u00eame \u00e2ge que celles de la photo, dont je ne sais rien. Je ne sais pas ce qu\u2019elles sont devenues, combien de temps elles ont v\u00e9cu. Steichen les a toutes r\u00e9unies, ind\u00e9pendamment de la race, du sexe, de la classe sociale. Avec ses photos, il voulait trouver un langage commun.<\/p>\n<p>Apr\u00e8s avoir \u00e9t\u00e9 pr\u00e9sent\u00e9es au MoMA de New York, les photos ont fait le tour du monde sous forme d\u2019exposition itin\u00e9rante. Ce succ\u00e8s n\u2019a pas emp\u00each\u00e9 Steichen d\u2019essuyer des critiques, peut-\u00eatre pr\u00e9cis\u00e9ment parce que l\u2019exposition plaisait aux masses, ce qui contrariait les critiques \u00e9litistes. Apr\u00e8s des ann\u00e9es sur les routes, l\u2019exposition s\u2019est d\u00e9finitivement install\u00e9e \u00e0 Clervaux en 1966. Par manque de place, seule la moiti\u00e9 des \u0153uvres est expos\u00e9e \u00e0 la fois dans le ch\u00e2teau d\u2019eau. Cette composition aussi fonctionne en interaction avec les visiteurs. Les salles rondes et obscures cr\u00e9ent une atmosph\u00e8re condens\u00e9e. \u00ab The Bitter Years \u00bb est ind\u00e9niablement plus politique que \u00ab The Family of Man \u00bb ; plus accusatrice, d\u00e9nonciatrice des in\u00e9galit\u00e9s.<\/p>\n<p>Face \u00e0 elle pourtant, mes pens\u00e9es s\u2019\u00e9vadent \u00e0 nouveau \u00e0 Clervaux. Vers ce couple \u00e2g\u00e9 qui rit aux \u00e9clats sur la balan\u00e7oire qui les fait s\u2019envoler vers le ciel. Vers ce b\u00e9b\u00e9 blotti contre sa m\u00e8re, qui pourrait \u00eatre n\u2019importe quel b\u00e9b\u00e9.
